THE BIGGER STONES PHILOSOPHY
GREAT POEMS:
- Luxuriate in lean syntax and economical word choice
- Radiate in their accessibility
- Delight in their artfulness
- Revel in specific nouns and strong verbs
- Bask in emotion created through imagery, figurative language, and specific, evocative details
- Pride themselves on their concentration and crystallization of language
- Explode
WHY BIGGER STONES?
Because of The Beat Farmers, of course! In the mid-80's, one of the greatest roots rock bar bands ever, The Beat Farmers, did a Paul Kamanski-penned tune called "Bigger Stones." The metaphor--as I interpret it, anyway--is that the things we did in the old days seem so much more important, carry much greater weight, and mean so much more than what we're accomplishing today. So this magazine is called "Bigger Stones" because I want to look back years from now and know that sharing poetry and The Beat Farmers, two of my favorite things, was an important way to spend my time. I want to be able to say "Seems like we rolled bigger stones back then; Seems like we rolled big stones."
